Bollywood is witnessing a time when actors are turning into directors. First, it was Aamir Khan’s fabulous Taare Zameen Par and now it’s the turn of the two- time-national award winning actor Ajay Devgan with his romantic saga, U, Me Aur Hum.
The plot of U, Me Aur Hum is about Ajay (Ajay Devgan) who meets Pia (Kajol) and falls madly in love with her at the first sight. After his disastrous first attempt at wooing her, he tries others ways and eventually wins over her heart and their love blossoms into a strong bond. Only later do they realize that their life is rocked by lies and deceit that drown their relationship. Pia walks out of Ajay’s life only to come back, and with no doubts in their minds about the way they feel for each other they rush into marriage despite advices from their friends. They happily settle down with their married life only to realize that no marriage can be complete without problems, some even insurmountable. Do they fight the battle to regain their love life or do they simply give up mark the story’s climax.
The actor-director Ajay Devgan clearly is good at his experiments with camera movements and has handled the emotional sequences with great ease. The second half is filled with dramatic interactions between the husband and wife and Ajay manages to create just the right impact without diving into the depths of melodrama.
Kajol who can bring life to any character given to her has played a part that does justice to her histrionic skills, but she has an underwritten role. Not much is known about Pia’s background. And post illness, the plot doesn’t focus much on her state of mind. But even when she is not able to steal the show, she proves more than once why she can still give any actress a run.
Music by Vishal is middling and fails to strike a chord. With enhanced music, Ajay could have scaled the peak. Also the placement of the marriage song and seduction number in the otherwise crisp second half seems inappropriate. Cinematography by Aseem Prakash Bajaj is commendable.
U Me Aur Hum is a sensitive story with several emotional sequences and is a treat to those who believe in love, marriage and perseverance. The film is extremely engaging in the second half, but in the phase of action and comedy, the pace of the film demands patience. U Me Aur Hum is often predictable but deserves a watch just for the solid performances by its lead pair!
